A history of serving communities
1864 saw the start of Yorkshire Building Society with the formation of the Huddersfield Equitable Permanent Benefit Building Society. Over one hundred years later, they created the first of their subsidiaries with the formation of YBS Share Plans in 1980, followed by the introduction of Accord Mortgages in 2003.
They’ve also taken on new names. Barnsley Building Society was the first brand to come into the YBS Group in 2008, followed by Chelsea Building Society in 2010, and Norwich & Peterborough Building Society in 2011.
Norwich & Peterborough itself started life as two separate building societies in the nineteenth century. Over the following decades, these two absorbed a variety of other societies until, in 1986, they merged together and became Norwich & Peterborough Building Society as you know it today.
