Business of the Year
We are proud to have been chosen as a double winner, including being named Business of the Year, at the Third Sector Business Charity Awards 2016.
The Society won the top prize as well as winning the Employee Engagement Initiative of the Year category for its colleague volunteering programme.
The awards scheme recognises the outstanding contribution UK businesses make to good causes. Yorkshire Building Society was selected by a panel of Third Sector judges as being the best example of a business that has “excelled in helping the wider community by embedding a culture of supporting charitable causes at all levels”.
The gift of time
We know that time can be just as valuable a gift as money to charities and community groups. That’s why our volunteering programme gives our employees the opportunity to support projects and charities in their local community.
Every employee has up to 31 hours paid leave each year to take part in voluntary or charitable activities to cover 7 hours for a team challenge activity, with the remainder being used in small portions of time throughout the year to take part in individual skills based activities, e.g., mentoring, befriending, school help.
2015 was the most successful year of the programme, with over 35% of employees getting involved in some activity compared to 25% in 2014, donating over 11,800 hours of time.
Yorkshire Building Society Charitable Foundation
The Charitable Foundation is a registered charity (number 1069082), independent of the YBS Group, and is run by two internal and three external trustees. It's their role to decide which good causes will receive support from the Charitable Foundation.
Since it made its first donation in 1999, the Charitable Foundation has made a difference to local communities across the UK by donating over £6 million to charities and good causes. In 2015 the Charitable Foundation donated over £392,000 to charities and good causes, with 89% of donations given to causes nominated by Society customers and colleagues.
The Charitable Foundation is predominantly funded by members who donate the annual pence of interest from their savings or mortgage accounts. The average donation is less than 50p per year (maximum 99p) but together their small change really can make a big difference to the lives of others in our communities.
Raising funds, helping people
We were delighted with our record breaking and award winning partnership with Marie Curie which raised over £1.1million from 2014 – 2016 to provide vital support for terminally ill people and their families across the UK.
We are now proud to partner with End Youth Homelessness as our charity partner 2017 – 2019 because we believe that to build a successful future, everyone needs a safe place to call home. Together over the three years, we aim to support over 700 homeless young people out of supported accommodation and into their own homes.
Through rental deposit guarantees and home essentials grants, our project gives practical help to young people across the UK who are ready to make that step to live independently. To support them in their new home, young people will benefit from financial advice and support in building the life skills and confidence they need to move on to lead successful and independent lives.
We all have a responsibility to our environment and we are very aware of our individual impact both within the business and local communities. Our extensive recycling programme allows us to recycle over 90% of our waste. Our commitment to purchase electricity from renewable sources continues and by the consistent monitoring of our energy usage we are reducing and eliminating wastages wherever possible.
